Ball Eastaway House, is designed for the couple artists as accommodation, gallery, studio as well as providing inspiration for their ideas.

Glenorie is an outskirt of Sydney. Without obstructing the runoff water, the design is environmental friendly by raising the pillars and allows the water to pass through the underneath.

Although the house is small, Glenn Mercutt emphasizes the spatial arrangement, especially the central space which acts as a gallery and painting display area. The orientation and positioning the skylights, openings, and verandah is considered in terms of privacy, views of the surrounding landscape, and the penetration of natural light into the internal spaces.

Skylights are placed in the secondary spaces, such as kitchen and bathroom in order to bring in the natural light, also to reduce the energy consumption. While, the north side of the house allows the flood of the light into the internal spaces with the aid of aluminum Venetian blinds, for controlling the amount of light and privacy.

The roof of the house is designed in arch-form to prevent the dry leaves settling on top, at the same time allow the flow of rainwater for the harvesting purpose.

The materials used by Glenn Mercutt for this small house are produced easily and economically such as glass, stone, brick, concrete, and corrugated metal. The house is built with lightweight material, as the aboriginal proverb, 'touch the earth lightly'. This solidifies the intimate relationship between the built and natural environment.
